 ABOUT THE ORIGINAL TEXT

"CHINESE FOLKLORE---PEIPING RHYMES"(also printed in the colophon "PEIPING RHYMES with ENGLISH TRANSLATION") was issued in 1932.
The contents of this book were almost cited from early collections which already edited. Their numbers and source texts I have found were as follows

 whole 214 contents--
121 contents were from "Chines Folklore--Pekinese Rhymes" by Guido A.Vitale 1896(V000-000 in text)
23 contents were from "Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes" by I.T.Headland 1900(CMG000-000)
64 contents were from 『北平歌謠集』1928 and,『北平歌謠續集』1930 by 李雪如(平 or 続000-000)
6 contents were from 劉復(劉半農)編訂 「謌謠選」『北京大學日刊』1918-1919

Much of their differ between this book's version and original text were not more than a letter, one phrases or so. Especially, many contents which cited from Vitale's one were almost agreed even with their translations. And the changes by the editor were sometimes only for the sake to proper for the grammar, and he would not consider those works along the process of the folklore.
So I could not regard this book as a "collection" which collected and edited by himself. And I look upon those contents only as "referential" case which must be added some comments.
But many articles and books by Chinese students, often cited the songs from this book. So, the influence of this book are not at least. But no one referred to each careers of reproduction and problems on each text. Now I have input those as a data and compared each cases with those in the source texts. And commented them at the end of each cases.
****************************************************

Jan.2002. I got a copy of『北平童謠選輯』by 陳子實. He said in his preface, "the part of English translations" of this book were compiled from "Kinchen Johnson's collection". But when compared tthem, we saw the editor done was only the selection and cut of the songs from original one. Not the "part" but the "whole". actually, the Chinese verses, translations, even the order of the songs and mis-translations were almost same as those in "Johnson's collection". Certainly he had not done any text critiques on his edition.
But this book also seen as a referenced book in the many collections and articles by students. So,I added results of comparation of those books in my notes.
No mark at the front of serial numbers could be seen as simply quotations. But the verses marked with ●, should not be thought to good for refer in your articles.

 [*---original preface---*]

 PREFACE
Folklore, or literature of the peasant class, the translator thinks, has now become a science and possesses an inestimable value for the elucidation of the social history of mankind. With a view to bringing to light the social life of the Chinese people this little book has been published. A part of the translator's time after class work has been devoted to collecting folk-songs. As a result he has succeeded in compiling and translating two hundred and fourteen. The materials this booklet contains are confined to those rhymes sung in Peking, because Peking, the ancient capital of many dynasties, is a place where there are more nursery rhymes than can be found in any other part of the country. Great care has been taken in selecting from the materials collected for this purpose those which are the most important, valuable, instructive, amusing, interesting, and touching. Most of the rhymes refer to insects, animals, birds, persons especially children, food, parts of the body, actions, professions, trades and business. By reading these rhymes one can gain a better knowledge of the home life, social conditions and civilization of the past of this ancient nation.
Although it has not been an easy task to reproduce the exact meaning of the original, the translator has done his best to keep intact the meaning and spirit of the original. It is to be understood that these rhymes have not been translated into verse, but common prose, because it is nearly impossible to express them in meter without damaging their meaning and spirit. So in order to be true the Chinese original, prose is preferred.
The compilation and translation of this book was rendered much easier by the work done by Baron Vitale of the Italian Legation in Peking.

 KINCHEN JOHNSON

(2) THE SUN HAS COME OUT LIKE A RED SPOT
The sun has come out like a red spot. My teacher rides on a horse and I on a dragon. The teacher riding on the horse goes along the streets I riding on the dark dragon cross over to the east of the sea. At the East of the sea there lives my family. In my family they cultivate five pots of flowers. My first sister likes the red peony my second sister likes the tree peony my third sister likes the petals of the peach blossom my fourth sister likes the large lotus blossoms. There is the fifth sister who has nothing she may like, and does not think of other but of becoming a nun. The women in the monastic life live very happily indeed: firstly they do not suffer the vexations of father and mother-in-law secondly they do not suffer a husband's maltreatment thirdly they do not bear children and fourthly they live freely and in a condition of blissful peace.
----------------
[* cited from V015-025. /●陳002-002:>剩下五姐無的愛→剩下五姐沒的愛>.I have not yet seen a variation which said the phrase as "沒的愛".]

The mother-in-law says "There are many bad things." (The wife says)"I, the termagant, will not live in your home bad things I will not do in your house. You had better write a bill of divorce to get rid of me."
----------------
[* Perhaps cited from 続195-092 with some changes.>悍婆娘→悍娘婆,寫張休書去了吧→寫張休書去了我>. The 1st case is seen as a simply error of this editor, but the second case can not be thought as so. Would it be suggested for a further variation? /=●陳003-004.]

(4) SHE LOOKS SO UGLY
She looks so ugly! She looks so ugly! She cannot do work she does not know how to brush pans she eats eight big millet puddings for one meal she eats much more than her husband: she can eat, clothe, but not work. She is much inferior to my daughter. It is entirely because her mamma can not educate her, that she leaves this good-for-nothing.
----------------
 [* Perhaps cited from 続196-093 with a change>全是婆婆不會養→全是媽媽不會養>.

(5) YELLOW DOG, YELLOW DOG, LOOK AFTER THE HOUSE.
Yellow dog, yellow dog, look after the house. I go towards the south to pluck plum-blossoms. I have not yet plucked a single plum-blossom, two persons arrrive at the house. My son's wife knows how to stretch out dough. She takes the roller and stretches a large slice of dough. She takes the knife and cuts vermicelli as thin as thread then she puts them in the cooking-pan, and they turn conglomerated about. Afterwards she puts them down in the bowls and they look like petals of the lotus blossom. She fills one bowl for her father-in-law, one bowl for her mother-in-law, and two half-bowls for her sisters-in-law. She hides one bowl under the dough-board. The cat comes over and licks the bowl the dog comes over and has broken the bowl the mice come over and gnaw the bowl. The house-wife is so scared that she stares vacantly. "Wife, wife, where do you sleep?" "I sleep in the stove-pit." "What have you for bedding?" "I have for bedding a goat's skin." "What have you for coverlet?" "I have a dog's skin." "What have you for pillow?" "I have a linen beater." The father-in-law takes in his hands a pile of bricks, the mother-in-law holds in her hands a row of whips, and they beat the wife so that she runs away as quickly as a stream of smoke.

(6) THE SMALL CABBAGE
Like the small cabbage which has become yellow and dry on the ground, at the age of seven or eight years, I lost my mother. I lived so well near my father only I was afraid that he would take another wife. He took one just after three years. She had given me a brother who is more worthy than I, because he eats the food, I only may pour the gravy on my rice. Weeping and wailing I think of my own mother.
----------------
[* cited from V013-022 with an error>養了個兄弟比我強→養了兄弟比我強>. There were many variations have lost the letter of 了 in the same phrase as 生個弟弟,養個弟弟 or 有個弟弟 but no case was lost the 個 as this case. /=●陳006-008.]

(7) RAKE THE ROOTS AND DVIDE THEM INTO TWO PARTS
Rake the roots and divide into two parts. In the middle of the road there comes a little student. He rides on a spotted horse to visit his father-in-law. His father and mother-in-law are not at home. He opens the door and catches sight of her (his future wife). Her pink cheeks are like peach blossoms. She has small bound feet she has cherry lips and her teeth are as white as rice. (He says) I go home and tell my parents that I will marry her at once.

(8) ON THE HIGH MOUNTAIN THERE IS A NEST OF CHICKENS
On the high mountain there is a nest of chickens. He is not filial to his mother, but only loves his wife. His mother wants to eat bread (he says) he has no money to buy it. His wife wants to eat pears, then he goes to the fair with a basket on his back. He has bought more than ten. He sits astride on the door-stone to peel the pears. He calls out: "My dear wife, my dear wife, eat them quickly, lest the 'old fellow'(his mother) should come and blame you."
----------------
[* the version cited in『北平歌謠續集』(1930 続191-091) said the 2nd phrase as "竟愛妻來不孝母". "母" was pronounced as mu3,and "妻" was qi1. If they were compared by their rhymes, 雞 ji1 -妻 qi1 would be better for chant than 雞 ji1 -母 mu3. and a variation cited in 柿崎進『中國の民謠と童謠』(1943)also said the phrase as "不孝母來竟愛妻". But except the words, the changes between two versions were few. Its so feels unnaturally. And the further variation have not ever seen. So I cannot decide the change was a revision by this editor, or was a variation from his memory. /=●陳008-010.]
